Despite the fact that David Teniers the Younger has always been considered one of the most important and prolific Flemish painters of the seventeenth-century, no critical biography of the artist exists which draws on the comprehensive documentary evidence of his life and work. Hans Vlieghe’s monograph aims to fill this gap. Based on the corpus of all known documentary sources as well as some newly discovered ones, this book traces the path of Teniers’s success and provides a detailed survey of his relations with his patrons and clientele, while also illuminating his studio practice and associations with fellow artists in Antwerp and Brussels. The author in addition examines Teniers’s manifold activities against the background of his ever-changing social and familial context. The resulting analysis draws a picture of a painter who came from the artistic milieu of Antwerp, yet deliberately made different choices from those of his father, from whom the young Teniers received his initial training. In order to meet changing tastes and satisfy the demands of the market, and following the example of Adriaen Brouwer, Teniers quickly acquired a reputation as a painter of low-life genre scenes. Vlieghe goes on to clarify how Teniers rose to become court painter to the Habsburg governors in Brussels, and the means used by the artist to achieve greater social recognition, which included extensive self-representation and considerable conspicuous consumption. Teniers’s later years were marred by difficulties, brought on by his diminishing success as an artist and by financial difficulties with his children. Vlieghe shows how these circumstances led to Teniers dying in rather deplorable circumstances.

Summary: Pieter Lastman war der bedeutendste holländische Historienmaler seiner Generation, hatte in Rom zum Kreis um Adam Elsheimer und Peter Paul Rubens gehört und genoss bei den Zeitgenossen hohes Ansehen. Sein Nachruhm jedoch steht im Schatten seines berühmten Schülers Rembrandt. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht Lastmans Leben und Werk im historischen Kontext. Im Mittelpunkt steht Lastman als gebildeter Künstler. Zugleich werden Aspekte seiner künstlerischen Herkunft und Praxis in Lastmans Biographie und seinen Gemälden und Zeichnungen eingehend analysiert. Charakteristisch für sein OEuvre sind seltene, vielfach erstmals in die Malerei eingeführte biblische Stoffe und Themen aus der antiken Mythologie und Historie. Sie zeigen Lastmans ausserordentliche Kenntnis von Texten als Grundlage von Themenwahl und Bildgestaltung. Die Analyse der Bilder zeigt den Künstler im Spannungsfeld von antiker und zeitgenössischer Dichtung, niederländischer und italienischer Kunst und konfessionellem Streit.

This monograph introduces the sixteenth-century Louvain artist Jan Rombouts (c. 1480 - 1535), whose oeuvre was previously assigned to Jan van Rillaer. Debates concerning Rombouts's identity are explored in detail by means of reinterpretation of published archival documents and the discovery of numerous new documents. The publication of the sources, most with full transcriptions, provides a sound basis for the author's arguments supporting the new identification. The remaining oeuvre of the artist, as it is known today, comprises engravings and paintings. This monograph argues for the expansion of Rombouts's oeuvre with some dozen stained-glass windows, roundels and a drawn design for a church window, while suggestions are put forth for other possible attributions. Attention is given to the historical context for Rombouts's activity as a glass painter, and the attributions of these works, none of which are monogrammed, are made by comparing their style with that of works securely attributed to the artist. This section is backed up by numerous illustrations of the windows, many of which are quite inaccessible. Finally, a discussion of archival sources concerning the Louvain confraternity of St Luke and commissions for works of art to local artists in the period covered by the book, form the rich historical background against which Jan Rombouts executed his oeuvre of engravings, paintings, roundels and stained-glass windows. The size, individuality, diversity and craftsmanship of this oeuvre enable us to finally identify and place him securely within the history of south Netherlandish art of his time.

Nooit is er in de Nederlandse taal hartstochtelijker over de liefde geschreven dan door Anna Bijns. En nooit heeft iemand zwaarder gescholden op ketters of venijniger de spot gedreven met huwelijk en gezin. En dat alles in gepassioneerde verzen in de volkstaal, die een wijde verspreiding vonden in handschrift en druk. Tot aan haar dood op 82-jarige leeftijd gaf ze onverschrokken commentaar op alles wat er in het roerige Antwerpen van de zestiende eeuw voorviel. Nooit toonde ze zich bevreesd voor de woede van de ketters en andere oplichters of voor repressies van stedelijke overheid of kerk. Maar ook bleef de vurige draad van bedrogen liefde en hartstocht branden, de schaamteloze smeekbeden aan zijn adres om weer terug te keren en de hoop om hem nooit meer en altijd weer te zien.
